To find out the answer I took to the internet for some first hand expert advice from those living and working in the business - to do that I headed over to LinkedIn.

I joined The Podcast Group and asked "Should Podcasts be free and is charging for a Podcast selling out?"

This is what the LinkedIn community had to say...

Mike Wilkerson

"The sad reality is that most will expect podcasts to be free"

Scott Roberts

"as a lot of people do not seem to mind paying 99 cents per app or per song download. The same could be possible for paying for a podcast episode download. Now, it may be a hard sell if said podcast is just Joe Schmoe recording in his basement and talking about nothing in particular"

Tristan Boyle

Lead Host and Producer at Anarchaeologist Podcast

"there's some thing important about podcasts being free for the consumer; the access to everyone is the appeal of podcasts".

Dave Jackson

Podcast Consultant at School of Podcasting

"Ricky Gervais tried to make is pay only. That didn't work. Most that do charge, does a freemium where you get x amount of episodes for free and then the rest you have to pay for".
So it appears you cna charge for Podcasts and YouTube videos but as the guys above have pointed out there are rules to help you on the road to success.
Need help keeping up to date with what you need to succeed in the digital age?
Why not give it a try... its free!!
