Business Tip of the Week No. 6

This is the 3rd blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project.

Blog by Ed O'Neill

 This tip is obvious in its simplicity. Are you truly happy with your ‘free’ freelance life? It is not for everybody, employment, living off government benefits or some other way of gaining income may fit more your personality. Think and reflect on that, you only get one life, if you are not doing what you enjoy and love now, get out quickly, otherwise it will be too late.

Business Tip of the Week No. 5

This is the 5th blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project.

Tip No. 5: Learn, learn, learn

Learn

All these tips are important but I think in terms of long-term stability, survival and growth of a freelancer or small business owner this tip is perhaps the most important. If you learn, you will grow – simple.

Learn

Be open-minded, listen and learn from those who do things better than you and worse than you or different to you. A day when you don’t learn is a day wasted.

Learn

The true power of learning is that once you have learned a skill you have it. It is part of your skill-set and can’t be taken away, this leaves you free to learn something more advanced or totally different. For example, you only need to learn once how to make successful ‘cold calls’ to potential customers, once you’ve learned how to do it the more you practice the better you get.

Come back to The MYOB Show blog next Monday at 12:00 GMT for more business advice.

Business Tip of The Week No. 4

This is the 4th blog in the series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday (12:00 GMT) here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project.

Tip No. 4: Plan, plan, plan

Go with the flow

Especially important if you are freelance/self-employed. Think about your industry, is there a seasonal flow of work? Do you need to prepare for times when there may not be so much work?

Look and book ahead

I suggest buying a year planner and taking each month and planning what work will be available. After that, plan for holidays or personal/professional development/learning in the lean times to recharge and be ready and prepared for the good times.

If you fail to plan you plan to fail.

Plan your finances, I cannot stress this enough. If you are familiar and comfortable with numbers this will give you such a head start. The numbers can literally predict the future. Predict what money you think you can make each month for the next year, and also predict your expenses.

The start

The first year will probably just be guesswork but after you have some ‘real figures’ from your first year the fun begins. If you can accurately predict these you are truly able to predict the future. If you are not comfortable with this I suggest either getting comfortable and learning or taking on help, accountants will usually save you their fee and more.

Business Tip of the Week No. 3

This is the 3rd blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project.

Top tip 3: Manage your expectations

Ed O'Neill
 Be Realistic

Set realistic targets and goals for what you think you can achieve, especially if you are just starting out. If you come from ‘a secure job’ you may feel like you ‘deserve’ to earn at least the same money as you did in your job. It may not work out that way. Expect that it will be difficult and give yourself as little pressure as possible to make it.

Support

Seek support from friends and family initially, you will need as much support as possible. The first years will be an educational process rather than a route to fame and fortune. You will make it, just not tomorrow! Expecting too much and getting demotivated is one of the reasons for an eventual business failure as explained earlier.

Come back to The MYOB Show blog next Monday at 12:00 for more business advice.
