Business Tip of the Week No. 10

This is the final blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project

Tip No. 10: Be Proactive

Blog by Ed O'Neill
The Reality

If you have worked as a freelancer/small business owner, you will already know that orders/enquiries/customers don’t fall effortlessly onto your desk. You need to work to get them.

 Make your luck

A voraciously proactive attitude will blow away the competition and ensure that you are always able to exploit any opportunities that come along. In fact, people who seem ‘lucky’ are actually those who are constantly proactive in searching for what they want, they always find the deals, the customers and the money.

You are the only one who'll stop you

If you don't feel proactive today you have to make yourself more proactive than usual. This is the biggest difference between languishing in a 9 to 5 job watching the hours go by, and being a freelancer or small business owner in charge of your own destiny.

Blog by ED O'Neill MD of NE Language Project.

Business Tip of the Week No. 9

This is the 3rd blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project.

Tip No. 9: Be and think positive

Don't worry... be happy

Although rather trite and overused, this is actually one of the features that separates successful people from ‘the masses’. The ability to be and think positive. Every situation is the perfect opportunity to learn, people learn from mistakes so if something bad happens a positive attitude will not only stop it from happening again but may also be enough to rescue the situation entirely.

Find Positivity

Being and thinking positive will either come naturally to you or will be extremely difficult to master. Over 3 quarters of people are naturally pessimistic and will never truly be able to ‘be’ positive, even if they struggle to learn how to ‘think’ positive. Positivity is something you have to ‘feel’ inside.

Come back to The MYOB Show blog next Monday at 12:00 for more business advice.

Business Tip of the Week No. 8

This is the 8th blog in our series of 10 excellent guest blogs every Monday (12:00 GMT) here on The MYOB Show blog. The series of blogs are written by Ed O'Neill - a successful business man and MD of NE Language Project

Tip No 8. Be flexible and understanding

Blog by Ed O'Neill

 The People

Being self-employed/freelance or running a business is all about the people. Customers, suppliers, potential customers/suppliers, outside 3rd parties, people in your network etc. People can be a real pain, I mean a real pain, they have needs and expectations you can’t hope to reach. They can be excessively friendly or excessively rude. You have probably spoken to both types and everybody in between. Make sure you are able to understand where everybody is coming from even if they are rude and be as flexible as possible.

Be fair to them and yourself

Don’t bend over backwards too much though, know when enough is enough. The slightest bit of genuine understanding and listening can melt even the coldest heart. Don’t take it personally, it’s business after all.

Come back to The MYOB Show blog next Monday at 12:00 for more business advice.
