Dom's Tip of The Week - 31.10.2014

If you are a Podcaster, video blogger, YouTuber, journalist or radio presenter here are my 3 tips to starting a professional interview.

You have between 7 to 20 seconds to persuade people to listen to or watch your content...

So you need to start any interview professionally, interestingly and efficiently...

Want to know how to do it?
Get free advice on digital content creation, social media and online broadcasting for free via The MYOB Show...
 My top tips:

1. Introduce yourself – short, sharp and top the point. Pointing out why you are worth investing time in.

2. The headline: Explain what the feature is about, and most importantly why we (the audience) should listen! Keep it snappy! Remember you only have 7 to 20 seconds to convince someone to watch your video before they decide to watch something else.

3. Introduce your guests and mention any related facts about them which could be relevant to the interview.

Points 1 and 3 give the listener context about who they are listening to and the validity of the facts or arguments they are about to give.

Point 2 gives the audience context to what the feature will be about – remember to hint to and conflict, suspense or jeopardy which may happen in the show.

Plus tease out any interesting features, competitions or listener engagement which may be coming up in the show.

Now you know how to make your content and keep you audience.

Story 1:

Are you sick of being bombarded by online ads? Do you worry about what free web sites (and services) are doing with you data? Or are you simply sick of ads on Facebook using up you precious data allowance?

If so, then you need to say bye to Facebook and hello to Ello.

What's the story...

Ello is a new advert free social network like Facebook...

The beauty is it is free to use and will not now and according to a new charter will not ever make money out of your selling data and selling advert space

So if you love it online, love to interact with others but don't like the idea of big brother selling your data then this could be the social media platform for you...

As we have learnt from the past when it comes to new platforms it pays to get in early.

Story 2:

We are asked questions, pushed to like, endorse, share and rate all day long online.

However it has got to the point now where some in the industry are asking if we are selling our personal data for far less than it's worth.

According to techradar.com - “The data market, “could be worth a trillion dollars by 2020”

“When YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006 it valued each user at around $20 dollars. By 2012 when Instagram was snapped up its users were valued at $30 and then when Whatsapp was bought by Facebook it valued each of us at around $42” - Techradar.com

How much is your audiences and your companies opinions and clicks worth? Currently we are giving them away for free to others who could be making trillions in the next few years.

Story 3:

Those of us who have just upgraded from SCART leads may be worried to hear that we may all need to invest in HDMI 2.0 (and after that who knows).

With 4K to be common place in the next few years and Super Hi Viz already used at the 2012 Olympics (in London) the HDMI cable may not be the cable of choice for long.

I watched the closing ceremony for the 2012 Games in Super Hi Viz which was 16x higher definition than HD. It was clear instantly that that Super Hi Viz was the future for broadcasting. Especially considering home much money and effort was being ploughed into the medium by major broadcasters.

So with super hi viz thundering towards us at a starting pace it wont be long before your HDMI lead will in to be dumped into the old wires tub with your Nokia 3310 charger and your Nintendo 64 controller.

So over the next few years until we all have access to Super Hi Viz I wouldn't get too attached to any of wires or hardware that hits the shops.

Why a successful Digital Business shouldn't be Scared of Working Offline

As an online broadcaster and a lover of all thigs digital I probably shouldn't say this but sometimes you can do good things when you go offline from time to time.

Proof The offline world can be pretty
You can do loads with modern tech and social media however the story in the article - A jobless man applied for the position of 'office boy' at Microsoft - proves that businesses (even successful digital ones) need to work both offline and online.

Sometimes it's nice to leave the office and have a good old pint, go to a networking even or even have a spot of lunch.

Why it pays to be funny!

What's the story?

"A comedy club in Barcelona is experimenting with charging users per laugh, using facial-recognition technology to track how much they enjoyed the show." - BBC Online Get the full story

Why?

Less people were going to see comedy shows thanks to the continued bad economy in Spain and a rise in ticket prices (due to a raise in tax on the ticket price)

How much will it cost?

"Each laugh is charged at 0.30 euros (23p) with a cap of 24 euros (£18)."

They use face recognition tech to measure how much the audience are enjoying the show. If you don't enjoy it... you don't pay, who can say argue with that?
Is it a success?
Yes, more people are coming to see shows and revenue has gone up buy 6 Euro per ticket holder (according to BBC online).
Are you an online broadcaster, video blogger, Youtuber or Podcaster? Are you looking for a new way to charge for your content? Could pay per laugh tech be the furture for you? If it works in the real world you couldn't it work online?
